In university, I was that student who had the color coordinated class notes, and could be seen doodling anatomical, chemical and biological processes as a means to remember the content. Learning is best when all senses are at work, and the visual design complements the auditory and written material.
I believe medical design can and should be both aesthetically beautiful and simplify complex material into bite size information chunks that can be well understood by the audience.
